 What is female fertility?

Female fertility is a woman's ability to conceive a biological child. A female is fertile from the age when her menstrual cycles start (menarche) and continues to be fertile up to the age when her regular menstrual cycle stops (menopause). The female hormonal cycle is approximately twenty-eight days long, women can become pregnant at any time during their menstrual cycle, peak fertility occurs during just a few days of the cycle: usually two days before and two days after the ovulation date. This fertile window varies from woman to woman, just as the ovulation date often varies from cycle to cycle for the same woman.

What causes female fertility problems ?

There are several causes of fertility problems in women, various medical issues can contribute to female fertility problems, including: Ovulation / hormonal disorders, damaged fallopian tubes, Endometriosis, Uterine problems, egg quality, age (fertility problems in women above 40) and lifestyle factors.

Statistics suggest that 35 to 40 percent of the infertility problems are caused by women infertility conditions, another 35 to 40 percent by men infertility conditions, and the last 20 to 30 percent a combination of the two, plus a small percentage of unknown / unexplained causes for infertility.

To check the female infertility causes some advanced fertility tests could be performed on infertile women by the expert fertility doctors at the fertility treatment clinics. These fertility medical tests for women may vary according to the suspected causes, the female infertility specialists differ in their approach, but here are some of the infertility tests a woman can expect are: Recording Basal Body Temperature (BBT)- self test on daily basis performed at home helps in ovulation calculation and to maintain the personal ovulation calendar. Ovulation Predictor- Similar to an at-home pregnancy test, with an ovulation predictor test, it is required to urinate on a stick indicator that will measure the level of lutenizing hormone (LH) in the urine. If there is no increase in the hormone, then one may have an ovulatory disorder. FSH Test- This at-home test can evaluate the egg supply by indicating whether one has high levels of follicle-stimulating hormone. This can be easily done on day 3 of the menstrual cycle with FSH test strips. Blood tests- Day 3 FSH Test, Day 3 Estradiol (estrogen test), Plasma Progesterone Level Test, LH (luteal hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) test. Probing Tests- Endometrial Biopsy, Abdominal ultrasound, Transvaginal Ultrasound, Sonohystogram, Laparoscopy, Hysteroscopy, Falloposcopy and Hysterosalpingogram.

After knowing the infertility causes the further steps can be taken to improve fertility by taking help from fertility specialists on individual fertility treatments. To increase fertility in women some methods like use of fertility supplements - foods, herbs and vitamins, dietary and lifestyle changes are also tried but their role in improving the condition or increasing the fertility is limited.
