What is Male fertility?
Male fertility is a complex process, which involves ability to make the female partner pregnant. A fertile man must be able to produce healthy sperm that can reach, penetrate and fertilize the woman partner's egg. For this male fertility to occur
Man must produce healthy sperm : Initially; this involves the growth and formation of the male reproductive organs during puberty. At least one of the testicles in man must be functioning correctly, and the body must produce testosterone and other hormones to trigger and maintain sperm production. Sperm have to be carried into the semen- Once sperm are produced in the testicles, delicate tubes transport them until they mix with semen and are ejaculated out of the penis. There needs to be enough sperm in the semen- If the number of sperm in the semen (sperm count) must be enough for fertilization to occur. If the sperm count is low, it decreases the odds that one of the sperm will fertilize the female partner's egg. A low sperm count is fewer than 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Sperm must be shaped correctly and able to move- If the movement (motility) or shape (morphology) of the sperm is abnormal, the sperm may not be able to reach or penetrate the woman partner's egg.
FERTILITY PROBLEMS FOR MEN:
There are several causes of fertility problems in men, some of these include: obstructive problems (blockages in sperm-carrying tubes), testicular injury and disease, varicocele, sperm disorders- count, motility, quality and morphology, genetic disorders, problems with erection and ejaculation, hormonal problems, general medical disorders that reduce fertility, drugs that reduce fertility, environmental toxins, psychological, fertility cycle, age, lifestyle and radiation.
Statistics suggest that 35 to 40 percent of the infertility problems are caused by men conditions, another 35 to 40 percent by women infertility conditions, and the last 20 to 30 percent a combination of the two, plus a small percentage of unknown / unexplained causes for infertility.
To check the male infertility causes some advanced fertility tests could be performed on infertile men by the expert fertility doctors at the fertility treatment clinics. These fertility medical tests for men may vary according to the suspected causes, the male infertility specialists differ in their approach, but here are some of the infertility tests a man can expect are: Sperm and Semen Analysis- A trained expert assesses the man's sperm count, their shape, movement, and other variables. Generally, a higher number of normal-shaped sperm means higher fertility. But exceptions are common. Many men with low sperm counts or abnormal semen are still fertile. Physical Examination- A good physical exam can detect varicocoeles -- described below -- and give clues to hormone problems, the physical exam should ideally be performed by a urologist. Hormone Evaluation- Testosterone, and multiple hormones made in the brain, control sperm production. Experts disagree as to how big a search should be done for hormonal causes of infertility. Genetic Testing- Genetic tests can identify specific obstacles to fertility, and problems with sperm.
After knowing the infertility causes the further steps can be taken to improve fertility by taking help from fertility specialists on individual fertility treatments. To increase fertility in men some methods like use of fertility supplements - foods, herbs and vitamins, dietary and lifestyle changes are also tried but their role in improving the condition or increasing fertility is limited.
